Time to check another item off your New Year’s Resolution List. Join the Palm Beach Zoo (thanks to presenting sponsor Bank of America) for Part 1 of their Conservation Leadership Lecture Series with “Mermaids & Manatees: 40 Years of Manatee Research” on January 29th from 6-8 PM. James “Buddy” Powell, Ph.D., Executive Director of Sea to Shore Alliance, will be the featured speaker.

Dr. Buddy Powell

For more than 40 years, Dr. Powell has worked to conserve manatees and other endangered species around the world, and his efforts have resulted in coastal protected areas in Florida, West Africa, Central America, and now Cuba. His approach integrates science and education to unlock solutions to conservation issues.

In 2008, Dr. Powell founded Sea to Shore Alliance, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that works to protect and conserve our world’s fragile coastal ecosystems and the endangered species that call them home. Dr. Powell received his B.Sc. from the University of Florida, his M.M.A. from the University of Washington, and his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in England. He was the recipient of the prestigious Pew Award in Marine Conservation in 2000, has been featured on “Champions of the Wild” and National Geographic’s “Wild Chronicles” documentaries, and has been honored with multiple awards and certificates. Dr. Powell has authored two books – “Manatees: Natural History & Conservation” published by Voyageur Press, and the “National Audubon Society’s Guide to Marine Mammals of the World,” as well as numerous scientific publications and popular articles.

The event will take place in the Zoo’s Tropics Café, with guests invited to enjoy cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and Zoo animal encounters from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. before the lecture presentation.

Seating for the Conservation Leadership Lecture Series is limited. Tickets are $20.00 per person per event, or a series package can be purchased for $55 per person online at palmbeachzoo.org. If you have any questions about the event, please call the Zoo at (561) 547-WILD ext. 285.

The Palm Beach Zoo’s Surprise Arrivals

Babies

Proving that good things come to those who wait, Fred and Wilma, the Palm Beach Zoo’s adult alligators recently celebrated the arrival of nine alligator hatchlings. While the couple had lived together in the habitat for more than a decade and Wilma had built a nest every year since 1999, these were the only fertile eggs. A member of the groundskeeping staff was the first to notice a baby alligator swimming in the habitat.

Guests are encouraged to come meet the first-time parents in the American alligator habitat located in the Florida Wetlands section of the Zoo. The baby alligators, however, are currently remaining behind-the-scenes in the Zoo’s Melvin J. & Claire Levine Animal Care Complex.

No word on whether any of the offspring will be named Pebbles.

Help the Palm Beach Zoo Go Nutty for Squirrel Monkeys

squirrel monkey

Who wouldn’t want to see this adorable face? Help the Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society introduce their four squirrel monkeys,  Marge, Mary, Rocky and Sarah, to the world. The monkeys are currently living behind the scenes at the zoo, but you can help them take center stage.

Power2Give project, in conjunction with the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County, is raising money for a new in-Zoo habitat for the four monkeys. Their own habitat will allow these monkeys a better life and enable zoo visitors to experience their playful, affectionate and charismatic personalities.

Any dollar amount is appreciated and all donations will be matched, so your generosity will be felt two-fold. Those able to give $500 or $1,000 will also receive the following benefits:

$500 – A special note of thanks from a squirrel monkey zookeeper, personal “Thank You” mention with your name recognized as a donor during the Grand Opening Ceremony debuting the new Squirrel Monkey habitat plus a one-of-a-kind Animal Art creation made for you by the squirrel monkeys

$1,000 – All of the above plus an additional Animal Experience (choose from the Capybara Experience, Aldabra Tortoise Experience, Sloth Experience or Black Bear Experience)

There are only three days left to make a donation, so act soon!
