Sober Homes in the Southend? Town Hall Meeting This Wednesday.

meeting_4

This Wednesday, October 14, there will be a community engagement town hall meeting to discuss sober homes and responsive actions that policy makers can take to balance the issue. The town hall will be an opportunity for residents to engage early in the discussion and offer local solutions to community needs and challenges.

What’s the skinny on this issue?

  • Many towns and cities have attempted to regulate sober homes, but have found themselves restricted by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as well as federal fair housing laws.
  • Sober homes, or halfway houses, are not regulated by the state since they do not provide treatment. And because alcoholism and addiction are recognized mental disorders, people who suffer from these conditions are protected under the ADA.
  • In February 2015, Rep. Lois Frankel, D-West Palm Beach, told a group of mayors and other municipal officials from her district that she had asked Housing and Urban Development Sec. Julian Castro and officials in the Justice Department about ways to help local governments regulate sober houses without violating federal law.
  • In June 2015, Governor Scott signed the “Sober Home Bill” into law. This bill establishes a voluntary certification program for recovery residences and recovery residence administrators. It prohibits licensed substance abuse treatment providers from referring patients to recovery residences which are not certified or not owned and operated by a licensed substance abuse treatment provider.

This is an issue that can impact our local community. Learn where the government officials stand and voice your opinion this Wednesday.

Get thinking and drinking with Bindu Yoga Studio at their monthly Spirituality on Tap. Attendees are invited to meditate and then discuss a specific sutra or topic while enjoying a local craft beer (or drink of their choice). It’s a whole new way to do Happy Hour.

This month’s event will be held on Friday, August 28 from 7-8:30. The topic is Yamas: The Eightfold Path of Yoga. For yoga newbies, yamas is one of the eight limbs of yoga that deals with our ethical standards and sense of integrity in terms of our behavior and how we conduct ourselves in life. (Kind of a twist on the Golden Rule.)

About Bindu Yoga Studio

Bindu Yoga Studio is a quiet retreat from our busy daily lives where we can nurture our body, mind, and spirit through the study and practice of yoga. This practice comes in so many colors, shapes, and paths that it can be challenging at times to navigate the waters and find what is right for you. For us, the truth is that whatever practice resonates with you, calls you over and over again to the mat, and opens your heart, is the practice that is right for you! We aim to honor and revere yoga in all of its diversity, with an attitude of grace and a willingness to allow the profound openings that are possible to pour forth from all of our hearts.

New Year’s Resolution- Find Balance in Your Life (Thanks to Yoga Path)

Moon Yoga

Now is the time of year when we go through the (annoying) process of making bold declarations related to our life that we never follow through on- otherwise known as New Year’s resolutions.

2015 is the year to finally break tradition and make good on our promises.

Resolution #1: Find Balance in Our Life

SoSo’s Yoga Path is making this resolution easy to fulfill with their Full Moon Restorative Workshop on January 6 from 7:30-9:30.

From the Yoga Path experts:
“The Full Moon can be seen at the time of reaching the top of the mountain. This is a time when we are able to see both sides of ourselves clearly and any tensions within are revealed at this time. As we are able to see both sides of any issue at this time we are able to work on harmonizing any imbalances. This is an excellent time to meditate with relation to any personal or world issues that may be concerning you.”

This workshop includes props, meditation and aromatherapy as well as the promise of restoring some much needed balance to your life for 2015. Spots are limited, so register today.

Give thanks for our local firefighters at SENA’s Covered Dish Mania

SENACovered-DiSh

It’s time to show our local firefighters how SoSo thankful we are for all of their work during the year. Join the South End Neighborhood Association for their 8th annual Covered Dish Mania on Friday, November 21 from 5:30-8:00 PM at Fire Station #2 (on Dixie and Pine Terrace).

“Before everyone gets caught up in the hustle and bustle of Thanksgiving, this is a nice opportunity to sit down and spend an evening with your neighbors,” says Robert Norvell, SENA’s President. “The kids get to explore the fire station and the adults, well we can catch up with our friends and make new ones.”

Bring your favorite covered dish and submit to the deliciously gluttonous nature of Thanksgiving.
